Vickie Hughes Lunstra Memorial Scholarship Recipient

October 13, 2015

Ashley Pavelka is the recipient of the Vickie Hughes Lunstra Memorial Scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Ashley is a senior in the Creighton University School of Nursing program and will graduate May 2016. She grew up on a farm in the Blue Hill area and graduated from Sandy Creek High School. Active in her sorority, Ashley is an outgoing, compassionate student nurse, currently working as a nursing assistant in the Family Care Center at Mary Lanning Healthcare. Beyond her excellent academic career, she has worked at the PaC2 (child care center) and volunteered in area nursing homes.

Dr. Donald Lunstra and sons, Christopher and Dustin, established the Vickie Hughes Lunstra Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation in October 2009 to provide financial assistance to nursing students in honor of their wife and mother. Applicants are considered based on their outgoing personality (similar to Vickie’s), financial need and intent to practice nursing at Mary Lanning Healthcare (MLH) or in south central Nebraska.

For 16 years, Vickie worked as a nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit at MLH where she made many friends. She was well known for her fun-loving personality and her excellent nursing skills.

When Vickie was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, Don devoted himself to her care with help from their nurse friends. Vickie passed away in her home, December 10, 1995.

Many thanks to the Lunstra family for establishing this memorial that honors Vickie and helps support quality healthcare education and exceptional workforce at Mary Lanning Healthcare.
